Come and See
GATHERING ISRAEL THROUGH INVITATION
We often approach sharing the gospel from a careful, cautious point of view. We may say we are “planting seeds” through our example and our conversation with those that are not members of the church. Indeed, all our communication, and even the very way we live our lives, is “seed planting” to a degree. Planting the seed is good. However the view of ourselves that we are “seed planters” can hide the truth that we are also on earth at this time to harvest from seeds that have been planted years and perhaps eons ago. The difference in planting and harvesting, as it relates to sharing the gospel, is that planting is the act of sharing information while harvesting involves invitation. Gathering Israel certainly includes seed planting, but as we ready the world for the second coming of Christ, our charge is to harvest! Thus, our goal is to invite!
Concerning the readiness for the harvest, consider the 4th section of the Doctrine and Covenants.
“Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men… For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;”
D&C 4:1, 4
Ultimately, it is through the expression of our agency that salvation is brought about. But what are we to understand about agency that will lead us and help us lead others to salvation and exaltation? Part of that answer must include the concept that the expression of true agency always involves action in some way. While we may look at one’s right to believe how and what they desire as one form of agency, in reality, agency is expressed by action. For instance, there are many in the world who profess to believe in the Savior Jesus Christ, but this does not mean they follow Him. It does not mean they take action on His teachings. The Savior said, “...they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me...” Without the act of following the Savior and doing the will of the Father, Israel is not gathered. Israel will only be gathered by the extension and acceptance of invitations to act. To be a gatherer, therefore, means to be an extender of invitations, not only a conveyor of information. Remember, seed planting is sharing information, either directly or indirectly, while harvesting will always include invitation.
“Anytime you do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—take a step toward making covenants with God and receiving their essential baptismal and temple ordinances, you are helping to gather Israel.”
President Russel M. Nelson
INFORMATION AND SEED PLANTING
If gathering Israel is more about invitation than information, what role does sharing the information of the gospel play? When we say “information” what we really mean is truth. Sharing truth plays an incredibly special role because it establishes a foundation in others for which the Holy Ghost has specific charge to bear witness. Information in the form of eternal truth, therefore, helps others to feel something - to feel divine confirmation within themselves. Gospel truths have a tendency to soften hearts and make soil fertile so that others can receive the seed and permit it to grow. When a person’s heart is softened by the example we set before them, by the love we show others through service, by sharing eternal principles that they can feel deep down are true, it is then that they are ready to receive, accept, and act on invitation.
The purpose of being a good example to others, fostering deep, caring relationships, and sharing gospel truths is to soften the heart’s of others so that when we extend an invitation, they are much more likely to accept and to act.
When Ammon, the son of Mosiah, was captured and brought before King Lamoni, Ammon expressed his desire to live among them, perhaps even until the end of his life. This softened the heart of the king. When the king later learned of Ammon’s loyalty in defending his flocks, his heart was further softened and the king began to wonder about the source of Ammon’s ability and loyalty.
A question developed deep within the king as to why Ammon was the way he was. And when Ammon stood before him and could discern the thoughts of the king, it brought King Lamoni to a point where his heart transformed from hard rock, to fertile soil. At that very point, Ammon extended the invitation:
“And the king said: How knowest thou the thoughts of my heart? Thou mayest speak boldly, and tell me concerning these things; and also tell me by what power ye slew and smote off the arms of my brethren that scattered my flocks…
Now Ammon being wise, yet harmless, he said unto Lamoni: Wilt thou hearken unto my words, if I tell thee by what power I do these things? And this is the thing that I desire of thee.
And the king answered him, and said: Yea, I will believe all thy words.
Alma 18:20-23
We learn from these scriptures that the purpose in us sharing gospel information, of being a good example, of serving one another is to soften hearts so that others are ready and willing to accept invitations. Information precedes invitation.
Sharing Without Inviting: Dennis and Lori Stanley
A couple of years ago, my wife and I entered a diner near Bear Lake to have some lunch. Because I had been pondering on how I could be a more effective minister to all people in a all places at all times, my wife and I struck up a purposeful conversation with our server. We quickly learned that she was not a member of the church but that she had grown up with friends who were members of the church. I seized the opportunity by asking, “What was it like growing up around so many church members? Was it ever difficult and did you ever feel left out?“ To this question, she shared that it had been hard at times because she felt she didn’t always fit in. She was aware of activities the girls were engaged in, to which she was not always invited. As she shared, we could sense her emotions and a little of the reflective hurt she felt. I apologized for any pain she had felt. It was an amazing moment and the spirt was present. I believe a slight amount of healing occurred. We had accomplished, in part, what we had set out to do – to be ministers.
When my wife and I returned to our vehicle, we spoke briefly about the simple conversation. I felt amazed at how, with a little purposeful effort, Heavenly Father gave us that simple, yet sacred opportunity to provide a little healing. But then, my wife asked a thought-provoking question. She said, “But what does she do now?” What my wife was really asking was what had we done to help her move closer to the gospel? After a moment of silence and no answer, we realized that while our interaction with this young woman was good, we had not given her any way to act. Our conversation had indeed conveyed information and our empathy with her situation, I believe, softened her heart. But, we had not extended any invitation. I reflect with a heavy heart that we may have done exaclty what the friends of her youth did – shared information with her and showed her that we cared, but not enough to invite her to come along with us. We probably planted a good seed. But we might have done more to harvest.
Lately, I’ve monitored myself and my gospel conversations with others who are not members of the church. I have found that I have the greatest tendency to plant the seed but not harvest – to share truth but not invite. Currently, like all of us, I’m learning slowly how to extend invitations. I have come to believe that it is only through invitations that Israel is gathered.
1
Extend an InvitationIdentify someone with who you have been “seed planting” by sharing occasional information about the gospel. Prayerfully consider how you might engage in the harvest by extending an invitation. Your invitation may be simple such as inviting them to ask God for help with something that you know is a concern in their life.

Share an Uplifting VideoThe church as an array of videos that relate to nearly everyone and every circumstance. Whether someone faces the challenges of divorce and single parenting, or feels directionless in life, there is probably an uplifting video on the churche's Youtube channel that can be meaningful to those you know. Visit the channel and watch some of these videos. Consider sharing by emailing or texting the link. Invite others to watch the video and to let you know what they thought or felt when watching it. For more information on sharing a video, use the gospel sharing tool, "UPLIFTING VIDEOS".

Stay Spiritually RootedDaily scripture study is imperative, especially study of the Book of Mormon. We know that the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. It most certainly, therefore, is key to gathering Israel. The Book of Mormon is the most powerful tool of conversion that we can share. Reading everyday from this sacred work will ground us spirutually, bring a greater amount of moment-to-moment spiritual direction to our daily lives, and will demonstrate to Heavenly Father the desire of our hearts to be a tool in His hands to gather Israel. Further, daily reading increases the presence of Holy Ghost in our lives, which invariably increases our love of God and of man, and our desire to engage in His work. With this in mind, remember to:
Read the Book of Mormon daily
Purify yourselves through daily repentance
Consistenly ask to be led to those ready to hear Him
More Steps ForwardAs a Stake Presidency, we have given much thought and prayer to how we can help members of the Ucon Stake participate in the glorious work of gathering Israel right here in our own beautiful valley. We have an unequivocal testimony of the work and believe it is truly time to gather as we ready ourselves, our families, our friends, and the world for the second coming of Christ. We also believe that our participation in gathering Israel is key in helping Heavenly Father fulfill His promise to all his children that they be given the opportunity to hear truth and to follow Him by accepting our simple, loving invitations. The thoughts we share here include those of our church leaders, our stake presidency, and that of our stake council. Also, many of the concepts in this series come from the book, “The Power of Everyday Missionaries” by Clayton M. Christensen, which we believe can influence how we think about and approach missionary work for the better. We invite you to investigate this book further as individuals and families. We hope you will accept our invitation to join us as we learn how to be gatherers of Israel.
